The Smiths were an English alternative rock band formed in Manchester in 1982. The band comprised singer Morrissey, guitarist Johnny Marr, bassist Andy Rourke and drummer Mike Joyce. They are regarded as one of the most important acts to emerge from the 1980s British independent music scene.
When asked about the group's name, Morrissey explained: "It was the most ordinary name and I thought it was time the ordinary folk of the world showed their faces.
